Jim Christ, Jamestown's #1 Sports Fan, passed away while listening to a baseball game on Monday, June 4 with some of his biggest fans by his side.
Born on April 17, 1950 to Ruby and Wally Christ, "Jimmie" was beloved baby brother to Chuck and Ginny. Because he had Cerebral Palsy, he got around with crutches and later in a wheel chair--and got around he did! He tagged along with his older siblings as they played and later accompanied them on their dates. He fished with his beloved great-grandfather "Bepa," attended Anne Carlsen School and worked at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company with his dad and brother. He camped and travelled with his mother and step-father, Bob Conitz. Most recently he worked at Jamestown Senior High as hall monitor.
And with the help of his family and friends too numerous to count, he was able to do what he loved best: attend thousands upon thousands of sporting events. Jim is legendary in his role as #1 Sports Fan and was very proud to be acquainted with coaches and referees, players, cheerleaders and other fans all over the state. He got a big kick out of visiting with folks court side and at Jack Brown Stadium--as long as you didn't block his view of the game! He carried out his duty as sideline coach so well that his nurse (a University of Jamestown graduate) at Sanford Hospital in Fargo recognized the Jimmie Booster and said, "He's the one that always shouted 'Bend your knees!' at the Jimmie basketball games!" He was also a hot shot at his beloved Minnesota Twins games and had the honor of throwing out the opening baseball with Darin Erstad.
Jim was a big fan of car races and was thrilled to be invited to go for a spin with a few racers, including his nephews. He just loved to be where the action was! He could stay out late, get up early and spend the entire weekend at races and tournaments--nothing made him happier.
Jim had been a member of the Elks and the Roaming Buffalos Campers. He travelled to California many times to visit relatives, most recently in 2017 to attend his aunt Charlotte's 100th birthday party. He attended Spring Training games in Arizona with his sister and visited Hawaii with his mother and brother. He was remarkable in his ability to show up and cheer on friends and family at their important life events--he was our biggest fan, too.
Jim was full of enthusiasm and interested in goings-on. He loved a juicy story and had many good ones to tell himself. He laughter was also legendary and would it would burst forth during a story he was telling, and he would be so overcome that he'd have to try very hard to calm himself down in order to finish the story. This joyful struggle was so hilarious to behold that when the story finally did come out it, wasn't nearly as funny as the telling of it! Jim brought out so much good in the people who knew him and cared for him. So many, many people gave him a hand and cheered him on. He knew this and was grateful for it. He will be so greatly missed. We were lucky to have him in our family and community, Jim Christ's #1 Fans.
The family is very appreciative of the community for being an extended family to Jim. Without every little thing you did for him, from putting a straw in his Coke, to opening a door, to giving him a ride to games, he could not have lived the exciting life he did. So thank you very, very much! We would also like to acknowledge Eventide Senior Living Community for welcoming him into their community and allowing him the freedom to get out and go to game after game after game after game.....!
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby (Titsworth) and Wallace Christ, brother Charles, sister Virginia, step-father Robert Conitz and sweetheart, Jane. He leaves behind four nieces, five nephews, a step-niece and 23 great-nieces and nephews, as well as an aunt and cousins.
