Laverne Hunt

October 9, 1928 — February 28, 2020

LaVerne Etta (Hoye) Hunt, 91, of Jamestown died peacefully on February 28, 2020 in her home.

LaVerne was born on October 9, 1928 at Trinity Hospital in Jamestown, ND to Elmer and Caroline (Fried) Hoye. She enjoyed a happy childhood in Windsor, ND where she attended grade school. She then attended and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1946.

After graduation, she went on to marry her high school sweetheart, Howard Hunt on June 20, 1947 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Jamestown, ND. LaVerne and Howard welcomed three children into their lives, James, Timothy and Sandra.

LaVerne was a lifelong resident of Jamestown where she enjoyed a long and successful career in the banking industry. She held various positions as a teller and auditor for area banks; James River National Bank, First National Bank (US Bank) and Stutsman County State Bank (Unison). After retiring from the banking industry LaVerne worked part-time at Dakota Brand. The highlight of her career was interacting with and helping people. She was active in the Good Neighbors Club, serving coffee and goodies on many trips.

A faithful servant to her Lord and Savior, she was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church where she was active in the Women of the Church and taught Sunday School for many years. She was instrumental in developing and coordinating the Fellowship Coffee Hour Co-Ops since it began in the mid-70’s. She continued to serve as a Co-op chairperson, volunteering her services to bake and serve goodies for weekly fellowship coffee hour until 2019. She was also the Co-op Team’s Funeral Coordinator.

LaVerne enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, cooking, baking, working with her flowers, playing cards and attending birthday lunches with her friends. A loyal Minnesota Twins fan, you could often find her in her chair watching them chase the pennant.

Giving to her family and others was the center of LaVerne’s life. Family traditions were important to her and close to her heart. For over 30 years, she brought her family together around the dinner table every Sunday evening for a time of love and sharing. She freely gave her unconditional love to all. We will always remember her beautiful smile.

LaVerne is survived by her children: James Hunt, Timothy (Pamela) Hunt and Sandra (Randy) Perkins; eleven grandchildren: Christopher, Benjamin (Elizabeth), Nathaniel (Whitney Drew), Jeffrey (Lindsey) and Joseph Hunt; Paul and Erin Hunt; Jonathan (Tonya); David (Sarah); Matthew (Mollie) and Timothy (Krysten) Perkins and 23 great-grandchildren; her brother, Marvin Hoye; 4 nieces and 3 nephews. LaVerne was known as “Granny” by all her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and close friends, a nickname that showed their affection and love.

LaVerne is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Howard, her grandson Casey Hunt and her sister-in-law Betty Hoye.
