Lloyd “Fritz” Thomas Clemens, age 94 passed away on Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at Ave Maria Village in Jamestown, ND. He was born to Roy and Florence (Pendray) Clemens on November 2, 1923 at the Clemens farmstead.
“Fritz”; to many who knew him, grew up and attended school in Lenton Township, 18 miles south of Jamestown and completed his eighth grade education and then began farming with his father. He learned and believed that hard work and honest sweat were the building blocks of a person’s character and that farming was the most honest and honorable way a man could spend his days on earth.
Private First Class Lloyd Clemens served during World War II in the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign with the United States Army 28th Infantry Division from May 17, 1944 to May 3, 1946 with honorable discharge as an Automatic Rifleman. He received the EAME Campaign Medal with three bronze battle stars for each of his designated campaigns; Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace (Battle of the Bulge), and Central Europe. Lloyd was also awarded the U.S. Army’s Good Conduct Medal and Combat Infantry Badge.
On August 12, 1945, Lloyd married Mollie Walker. They lived on the family grain and cattle farm in Lenton Township and raised four sons while watching their crops ripen, garden and flowerbeds bloom and boys grow tall in the sun. They shared their pride from life experiences and found reason to celebrate life events with family and friends abundantly. In 1990 they retired from farming and moved into Jamestown, ND. They were members of St. John’s Lutheran Church, American Legion, and Eagles. Mollie died in June 2001.
Lloyd and Mollie’s social activities included serving on various township and school boards, County ASC and FHA boards, and St. John’s Lutheran Church Council. They hosted many Clemens family reunion gatherings when living on the farm and this tradition continues to take place every three years today.
Lloyd is survived by his two sons Alan (Jackie) Clemens, Anchorage, AK and Wayne (Wendy) Clemens, Fargo, ND, daughter-in-law Debbie (Price) Clemens; five grandchildren, Travis (Erica) Clemens of Velva, ND, Andrea (Nathan) Bitz of Jamestown, ND, Justin (Sara) Clemens of Rolla, ND, Megan (Casey) Aldinger of Jamestown, ND, and Alex Clemens of Orlando, FL; eight great-grandchildren Madison Mandan, Cienna Clemens, Tessa Clemens, Connor Aldinger, Ty Aldinger, Jackson Bitz, Jase Clemens, and Drake Clemens; two sisters Mildred (Bill) Reinke of Billings, MT and Ardell Forehand of Weaverville, NC.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Mollie Clemens, sons Gerald “Jerry” Clemens and Brian Clemens; sisters Hazel Conley, Marion Oster, and Margaret Reinke; brothers Howard Clemens and Tom Clemens.
Celebration of life service will be 12:00 PM, Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at Good Shepherd Chapel, Ave Maria Village, Jamestown, ND with Deacon Ken Votava, officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
