Michael Wayne Sjoberg

Michael Wayne Sjoberg, 63, Jamestown, ND died peacefully on Thursday, January 13, 2022 in his home.

Mike was born July 13, 1958 in Hillsboro, ND to Marlys (Nelson) and Earl Sjoberg. He graduated from Devils Lake High School in 1976 and continued on in the electrical field.

Mike has a younger brother Mark Sjoberg who he looked up to with pride. When both of his parents remarried, he gained amazing bonus parents and five step-siblings. The blended families created great life experiences and fun stories over the years.

Mike was briefly married to Vicky Howes on November 22, 1980. They had one daughter, Alicia.  Mike was a farm hand for various farmers and ranchers. He enjoyed planting the crops and watching them grow. He was employed by the Mewes family in Colgate, ND where he thoroughly enjoyed being their farm hand and would reference his enjoyable time spent on their farm. He later worked in the electrical maintenance field in Fargo, ND. Most recently, prior to retirement, he worked for Walmart in the evenings stocking shelves in Jamestown, ND.

Growing up, Mike was quiet, intelligent, and an athlete. He played hockey and was an avid water skier. He enjoyed taking on challenges of barefoot skiing in cut-off jean shorts (too stubborn for fancy, protective wetsuits) at Golden Lake, near Hatton, ND at his mom and Ernie’s summer lake cabin or Swan Lake, near Fergus Falls, MN at his dad and Janet’s Lake home. Mike enjoyed his morning coffee, his Marlboro Reds, reading, watching old westerns on TV, pheasant hunting, golfing, and Sunday church.

Mike’s first and main love that carried him throughout his entire life was his love for horses. He was a horse whisperer and a true cowboy. He trained and showed horses. He would spend hours sharing stories of his ponies and horses as a child and his beloved horse, Gringo. He enjoyed going to the Fargo horse races and shows.

Mike is survived by his daughter, Alicia Howes (Craig Olson) and his three grandchildren, Olivia Hanson, Luke Olson, and Calvin Olson, all of Kindred, ND; parents: Earl and Janet Sjoberg, Sun City, AZ and Ernie and Marlys Grotte, Mayville, ND; brother: Mark (Brenda) Sjoberg; step-brothers: Randy (Abbie) Paulson, Steve “Dodge” (Kim) Paulson; step-sister-in-law: Wanda Paulson; aunts, uncles, many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Mike was preceded in death by his grandparents: Oscar and Louise Sjoberg and Carl and Edna Nelson and step-brothers: Troy Paulson and Gary Grotte and step-sister, Karen (Grotte) Immel-Bjornstad.

A family and close friend gathering and burial will be held this Spring, 2022.
