Alice Marie (Berner) Swanson, age 92, passed away quietly at home on September 21, 2020 surrounded by family. She was born in Jamestown, North Dakota to Glenn and Alice (Grettenberg) Berner on March 6, 1928. She had two older sisters: Mary (John) Quanrud and Jewell (George) Barron, all who preceded her in death.
Alice (or known to many as “Toots”) graduated from Jamestown High School while also working at Berg Studio and later at King Studio as a retoucher. She had also worked as a Candy Striper and a nursing assistant at Jamestown Hospital in her youth.
In 1947, she married her lifelong partner Arnold L. Swanson. Together they owned and worked on their family farm south of Jamestown. While on the farm, they had two children, Timothy and Debra. Together they shared a love of nature and photography. Alice was involved in the local community and The First United Methodist Church. She served as a 4-H leader, worked on local elections, and collected information for school census, all while still working on the farm. Alice remained on the farm after Arnie passed away in 2008, then moved into her own apartment at The Legacy in 2017.
Alice is survived by her son, Tim (Susan) Swanson, daughter Deb (Raymond Larry) Lee, granddaughter Kayla Swanson, and great-grandson Rylan Dahl. She is also survived by a very close family friend Gary L. Pearson and his wife Rickie. Alice had many special friends she cared for deeply, along with much loved nieces and nephews. As she said with a smile in her last days, she was tired from loving so much. She will be missed.
A private graveside service at Highland Home Cemetery will be planned when the threat from the pandemic allows.
