Allan Fletcher, 80, Jamestown, ND, died Wednesday, August 1, 2012 after a short battle with cancer, at his lakeside cabin on the Jamestown Reservoir.
Allan was born June 20, 1932 in Jamestown, the son of Youart and Erma Fletcher. He grew up on the family farm near Courtenay, ND. He attended Corinne Township and Jamestown schools. He left school to help on the family farm and later earned his GED while in the US Air Force. Allan was in the Air Force for four years from 1952 to 1956, and was in the Air Force Reserves from 1956 to 1960. Allan married Nancy Schultz June 3, 1961. Allan and Nancy spent their life farming near Courtenay.
Allan was a member of the Presbyterian church in Courtenay, where he served as a trustee and an elder. After the 1982 closing of the Courtenay church, Allan became a member of the United Presbyterian church in Jamestown. He was also a life member of the Elks and served Corinne township for a time as tax assessor and on the township board.
Allan loved working with his trees, driving around checking crops, driving his "green machines," teasing grandchildren (and everyone else!) and grilling steaks. He was a bit of a card shark---and enjoyed time playing pinochle, 80 cent rummy and poker with friends and grandkids. He especially loved western and military books, movies and documentaries and tried to get many people to watch the "Memphis Belle" with him. Many fun times were spent at their lakeside cabin---fishing, 4th of July gatherings, legendary cabin parties and much back and forth "pranking" with cabin friends.
Allan was proud of his English heritage and had the opportunity to visit England on three separate occasions-during his Air Force days, on his honeymoon and again during his retirement.
Allan is survived by his wife of 51 years, Nancy; his children, Robin (Craig) Barnes, Wimbledon, ND, Dana (Amy) Fletcher, Courtenay and Stacey (Michael) O'Brien, Spicer, MN. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Curt (Emilee) Barnes, Kelli (Jason) Connolly; Kasey, Matt and Dallen O'Brien; and Katie, Derek and David Fletcher; great-grandchildren, Carlee and Chloee Barnes and Caleb Connolly; one sister, Corinne Kolnes, Detroit Lakes, MN; one brother, Richard Fletcher, Courtenay; sisters-in-law, Shirley Fletcher, Jamestown and Dee Fletcher, Buffalo, MN and brother-in-law, Duane Carlson, Jamestown.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Jim, Bill and Art; and two sisters, Catherine Mickelson and Arlene Carlson.
