Allen Van Winkle, 98, of Jamestown, ND, formerly of Wimbledon, ND, died Saturday, August 5, 2006 at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home, Jamestown.

Allen Van Winkle was born August 21, 1907 on a farm near Mt. Ayr, Iowa in Ringgold County, the son of John and Electa (Smith) Van Winkle. In 1909, the family moved from Iowa and lived in Oxbridge township, south of Wimbledon, ND. They moved a year later to a farm north of Wimbledon where they lived for six years. In 1916, they moved to a farm south of Courtenay, ND known as the Kellogg Farm. In 1926, they bought land and erected farm buildings, and this has been the home place since. Allen spent most of his life in the vicinity, with the exception of 1938-1946 when he owned and operated a business in Pillsbury, ND. He married Nina Swartout in 1942. They traveled during the winter months and later bought a home in Mesa, AZ. They spent the winters in Arizona and summers on the farm. Nina died October 19, 2003. Allen loved the farm and rural life. He leaves a vacancy in our midst and will be greatly missed.

Allen was a member of the St. John's Methodist Church, Wimbledon and served on the church board.

Allen is survived by a sister, Gladys Putikka, Wadena, MN; and thirty-nine nieces and nephews.
