Alvin August Reich

May 24, 1954 — May 3, 2015

Alvin Reich, 60, Medina, ND passed away Sunday, May 3, 2015 at his home. Alvin August Reich was born on May 24th 1954 to Emil and Rose (Suko) Reich in Jamestown, ND. He was the fourth child and the first male born to the Reichs. He grew up on the family farm and attended Medina Public School. He was the salutatorian in the graduating class of 1972. Alvin enjoyed basketball, baseball, and track. After high school, he attended North Dakota State University and obtained a degree in Mechanical Engineering. While at NDSU, Alvin started dating Rebecca Heupel. They were married on December 28th, 1977.
After graduating from college, Alvin worked a couple of jobs but couldn't really find fulfillment in any of them. While at a Campus Crusade conference, the keynote speaker encouraged the audience to pray for a dream if they were unsure about what they should do with their lives. He was given such a dream to come back to Medina to reach the community for Jesus and to farm his parent's land. The first year they were back on the farm was a disappointment to say the least, they actually lost money. Staying true to God's calling, they persevered through the tough first year. They decided to start milking cows and carved out a living doing that for the last 34 years. Alvin and Rebecca parented 8 children spanning 21 years from the oldest to the youngest.
Alvin was the kind of person who liked to get to know people who happened to be around him. He took a genuine interest in other people's lives. He was a great small talker and could relate to just about anyone. Alvin's main interest outside of farming (when there was time) was his kid's activities. He would always find someone to talk to and let them know that one of his kids was in the game or performance. He was also able to find time to coach a few of the sports teams the kids were on. He was a builder and loved doing things with his hands. The yard is full of things he built for the kids: a water slide, a batting cage, some monkey bars, swings and a tree house. Alvin always enjoyed laughing and having a good time. He enjoyed quoting old movie lines and singing phrases from old songs. He loved to tease and had a quick wit.
Alvin is survived by his wife Rebecca; Children: Hannah, Adam and Kristi (Brosz), Elizabeth, Jonathan, Caleb, Phillip, Eva, and Abigail; Grandchildren: Griffin, Mia, Ian, and Wes; Siblings: Delores Lowderback (Dennis), Alice Martin (Jonathan), Irene Martin (Timothy), Ronald Reich (LuAnn), David Reich (Ann). He was preceeded in death by his father in 1969 and his mother in 2006.
