Alvin J. Steckler, 77, Jamestown, N.D. died Monday, October 21, 2002 at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home in Jamestown, N.D.
Alvin was born September 13, 1925 in Taylor N.D., the son of Julius and Amelia (Held) Steckler. He grew up on the family farm near Taylor, N.D. The family moved to Corrine Township north of Courtenay, N.D. He returned to Richardton, N.D. where he attended Assumption Abbey until 1942, when he returned to the farm after his brother was killed during World War II.
He moved to Jamestown, N.D. and worked at Montgomery Ward for a short time. He worked for George Hoffman and later for Herman Frey as a farm laborer. He worked for Lindberg Construction at Carpio, N.D. for a short time and returned to Jamestown.
Alvin married Caroline Peters on September 14, 1946 in Moorhead, MN. He worked for Carl Frey until the fall of 1947. He worked for Melland - Johnson Pontiac Garage as a mechanic and bodyman for 7 1/2 years. In July of 1955 he worked for Dan Duggan Standard Oil Compnay west of Jamestown for 7 1/2 years as a certified diesel mechanic. In January of 1962 he went to work for Standard Oil Amoco as a transport driver, hauling mainly to North and South Dakota until the fall of 1985 when he retired.
Alvin was a member of the Basilica of St. James and a Life Time member of the Jamestown Eagles Club. He enjoyed golfing and spending time with nature. He helped with the American Legion Baseball league until 1975.
Alvin is survived by his wife, Caroline Steckler, Jamestown, N.D.; three daughters, Janet (Don) Heupel, Algona, IA; Jean (Louis) Legge, Valley City, N.D.; Virginia (Bruce) Salzsieder, Edgeley, N.D.; one son, William A. (LeAnn) Steckler, Grand Forks, N.D.; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three brothers, Edmund (Evelyn) Steckler, Jamestown, N.D.; Kenneth Steckler, Oregon; Lawrence Steckler, Auburn, WA; six sisters, Florence Cebula, Jamestown, N.D.; Caroline (Jim) Askins, of California; Frances (Melvin) Hennings, Texas; Janice Bougie, Minnesota; Marie (Tom) Shipp, Michigan; and Lucille. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers (Jacob, Clarence, and Emil), and one sister (Arlene).
Funeral Mass: 10:00 A.M. - Thursday, October 24, 2002 at the Basilica of St. James Catholic Church, Jamestown, N.D., with Father Steven Reiske officiating.
Vigil: 8:00 P.M. - Wednesday, October 23, 2002 at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, N.D.
Visitation: Wednesday, October 23, 2002 Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, N.D. 1:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.
Burial: Calvary Cemetery - Jamestown, N.D.
