Alvin Wibstad

March 29, 1913 — May 22, 2004

Alvin Wibstad, of Jamestown, passed away peacefully in his sleep on May 22,

at the age of 91.

Alvin was born March 29, 1913 in Ypsilanti, ND to Albert and Thea Wibstad.

Growing up, he worked on the family farm until venturing into Jamestown to

go to work at Anderson Motors. In 1932, Alvin joined the Conservation Corps,

known as the CCC. This organization gave Alvin the opportunity to travel the

countryside and meet fascinating people.

Alvin joined the Army on March 20th, 1942, just before his 29th birthday. He

is a highly decorated WWII veteran, having proudly served with the 90th

Division Reconnaissance Troop. His unit stormed the beaches and was heavily

involved in a number of battles in several WWII theaters including Normandy,

Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Adrenness. He earned the

Purple Heart, which he received after taking shrapnel to the head.

Upon his honorable discharge in 1945, Alvin returned home and opened Al's

repair shop. He also rekindled a romance with Agnes Anderson, which had

started while they both were attending Corwin School #1. They married in the

summer of 1951, a marriage that would last 42 years, until Agnes' death in

1992. and moved onto the Anderson Farmstead, where their daughter Yvonne was

born in 1952 and where Alvin spent his days farming and operating his repair

shop.

From 1954 to 1964, Alvin and his family moved several times between the

farmstead, Montpelier, and Hopkins, MN where Alvin held positions of welder,

truck-driver, owner of a repair shop, and operator of jet-based bus service

as well as continuing to farm.

In 1965, Alvin and his family moved to Jamestown to settle down for good, as

he accepted a position with Stutsman County.

Alvin had many favorite ways to spend his time. He enjoyed visiting with his

children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, hunting, fishing,

traveling, attending socials and playing cards at the Eagles club, following

the Minnesota Twins, mixed in with an occasional visit to a casino to try

his luck at the slots.

Alvin's , sense of adventure, raspy chuckle, and the way his eyes lit up

who knew and loved him.
