Dr. Anne H. Carlsen, 87, Jamestown, N.D. died Sunday, December 22, 2002 at her home in Jamestown, N.D.
Anne H. Carlsen was born November 4, 1915, in Grantsburg, WI, the daughter of Alfred and Maren (Nielsen) Carlsen. She grew in Grantsburg, WI, graduating from St. Paul-Luther Academy - St. Paul, MN, in 1932. She graduated in 1934 from St. Paul-Luther Jr. College - St. Paul, MN, following graduation she attended the University of Minnesota, graduating Cum Laude in 1936. From 1938-1940 she was a High School Teacher for the Good Samaritan School in Fargo, N.D. In 1940 she taught for one year as a Junior High School Teacher at Gillette State Hospital in St. Paul. Minnesota. In 1941 she moved to Jamestown, ND, where she was a High School Teacher at the Crippled Children's School, during this time she earned her M.A. degree from Northern University of Colorado, Greeley in 1946. From 1948 to 1949 she served as Principal at the school. She received her Ph.D. from University of Minnesota in 1949. In 1949 she served as Child Guidance Director at the school and in 1950 she became the Administrator for the Crippled Children School until 1981. On a leave of absence she served as Clinic Coordinator for Cerebral Palsied Children School in Southern California. In 1981 until the present time she has served as a Consultant for the Anne Carlsen School, Jamestown, ND. In 1985 a special honor was given to Anne with the unveiling of a Bronze statue of Dr. Anne Carlsen with handicapped student in front of Anne Carlsen School.

Psychological Assoc. (Secretary 1961-63, President 1964), Council for Exceptional Children and N.D. Council for Exceptional Children, Nat. Rehabilitation Assoc. and N.D. Rehabilitation Association (President, 1961), 1954-81 N.D. Conference of Social Welfare (Member Executive Comm 1954-57 & 1960-61), N.D. Mental Health Assoc., Zonta International (Secretary 1962-63; President 1970), American Assoc. of University Women (Chairman - Social Studies Committee 1952-56.)

She received three Honorary Degrees: Doctor of Humane Letters - University of N.D. 1982, Doctor of Humane Letters - Wartburg College, Waverly, IO 1960, and Doctor of Laws - Jamestown College, Jamestown, ND 1959.
Anne is survived by a brother, Alfred Carlsen, of McCall, ID. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and three brothers.
Memorial Service: 2:00 P.M. - Sunday, January 5, 2003 at the Jamestown Civic Center, Jamestown, N.D. with Pastor JoAnne Moeller officiating.
