Arthur Opp

Arthur Opp, 86, Medina, ND died Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Jamestown Regional Medical Center.

Arthur was born June 28, 1926 at the family farm near Napoleon, in Logan County, ND the son of George and Elizabeth (Himmerich) Opp. He grew up in the Logan County area and received his education in rural Logan County schools. In March of 1950 he moved to a farm south of Medina and on August 20, 1950 Arthur married Alice M. Hins. He was drafted into the US Army on March 30, 1951 and served during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in March 1953 and returned to North Dakota.

They moved to Jamestown where Arthur worked for Nierlings Texaco Station. They moved back to a farm southwest of Medina in 1954 and purchased it in 1958. They resided there and farmed until 1981 when they moved into Medina. Arthur continued to help on the farm until 1989 when for health reasons he retired from farming, but continued to work in his wood shop, where he built and repaired furniture. He loved woodworking and did many projects for family, friends and the church.

Arthur was a member of English Lutheran Church, Medina, where he served on the church council in various positions. He enjoyed singing and was in the church choir. He loved to play pinochle, Yahtzee and Aggravation. He also served on various boards including the Farmers Grain Elevator, Chicago Township Board, ASCS County Board and Medina PTA. He was a member of the Medina American Legion and VFW.

Arthur is survived by his wife of 62 years, Alice, Medina; children, Douglas (Barbara) Opp, Jamestown, Karen Opp, Jared (Julie) Opp and Janine (Dwight) Hofmann, all of Medina; 14 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Esther Opp, Napoleon and Genny Opp, Jamestown; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; three sisters; three nephews; one great-nephew and godchild, Brenda.
