Arvid D Brockman

August 1, 1946 — March 2, 2022

Arvid Dean Brockman, age 75, passed away in his home on March 2, 2022 with his family by his side.

Son of Carroll and Grace Brockman, Arvid attended and graduated from Ceylon High School in Ceylon, Minnesota where he was a standout athlete competing in baseball, basketball and football along with being the homecoming king.   Arvid lost his father at 13 due to a farming accident and was raised by his mother Grace Brockman.

Arvid met Darlene Johnson of Fairmont, Minnesota in 1961. Together they enjoyed cruising up and down Blue Earth Avenue in Arvid’s 1957 Mercury two-door hardtop in Fairmont, MN. The couple married in 1964 and in 1966 moved to Rapid City, South Dakota where Arvid began his 35-year career with Montana Dakota Utilities. He retired at 55 as the District Manager in Jamestown, ND.

In addition to his MDU career, Arvid, served as a city councilman, Rotarian, Frontier Village board member and Federal Credit Union board member. He was actively involved in volunteering and helping build Valley City’s youth hockey program.

For the past 25 years, the couple has enjoyed retirement in Fort Ransom, ND where they enjoyed adding their touches to their Victorian home, gardening and canning, landscaping and spending time with their children and grandchildren and beloved pets. Arvid enjoyed the simple pleasures in life with his family and all that the outdoors had to offer. Whether at their winter home in Lake Havasu City, AZ or their summer home in North Dakota, they were always on the hunt for furniture that they could get at a bargain price and repurpose for their annual sale.

Arvid was preceded in death by his parents Carroll and Grace Brockman; stepfather Orin Moen; father and mother-in-law Lester and Ruth Johnson; son-in-law Michael Sauer and granddaughter Lindsay Sauer.

Arvid is survived by his wife of 57 years Darlene Brockman, Fort Ransom; daughter Kari Sauer (Brian Jost) Coleharbor, ND, son Mark Brockman (Margaret Brockman) Rapid City, SD; and daughter Heidi Schmeichel (Jay Schmeichel), Bismarck, ND.  Grandchildren Kelsey Seelig (Trent Seelig); Sommer Dutton; Evan Schmeichel; Grant Schmeichel; Pierce Schmeichel and Ciara Schmeichel.
