Bernard F. Steele, 87, Pingree, North Dakota, died Thursday, January 14, 2010 at Jamestown Hospital.
Bernard was born February 17, 1922 in Kensal, ND, the son of Grover and Florence (Wescom) Steele. He attended elementary school in Edmunds, ND and graduated from Pingree High School in 1941. On October 14, 1942 he entered the US Army and was stationed in Ft. Sam Houston, Texas. He was honorably discharged on November 20, 1943. On July 13, 1943, Bernard married Dorothy Wegman in San Antonio, TX. Upon their return to North Dakota, he farmed in the Edmunds area. In 1947 they moved to Pingree, where he farmed all his life. Dorothy died on August 15, 1982. On December 14, 1985 Bernard married Phyllis Betts Dunwoodie in Jamestown. They continued to live in Pingree.
Bernard was a Plainview township supervisor for many years, served on the Pingree School Board, and was a member of the American Legion for 60 years.
Bernard liked to tell stories and joke with everyone. He enjoyed dancing and all sporting events.
Bernard is survived by his wife, Phyllis, Pingree; four sons, Dennis (Betty) Steele, Bismarck, ND, Donald (Ginny) Steele, Pingree, David (Deb) Steele, Jamestown, and Delton (Lori) Steele, Fargo, ND; one daughter, Darla (Mark) Jesser, Dickinson, ND; 12 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; two step-children, Bruce (Liz) Dunwoodie, Lake Stevens, WA and Barb (Dennis) Sanvig, Charles City, IA; 6 step-grandchildren; one step-great grandchild; two brothers, Clayton (Clarice) Steele, Carrington, ND and Robert (Denise) Steele, Jamestown; and one sister, Margie Abernathy, Missoula, MT.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy; parents; two brothers, Delbert & Floyd; and one sister, Darlene Oak.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Pingree Cemetery.
