Cel Novak

Celestine ""Cel"" L. Novak, 70, of Jamestown, ND died Sunday, February 29, 2004 in Mesa, AZ. Cel was born August 20, 1933 in Pisek, ND the son of James and Stella (Houska) Novak. He was raised in the Pisek area and received his education there. He worked on the family farm until he entered the U.S. Army on June 12, 1952 in Fargo, ND. He served his country in the Korean War. Cel was honorably discharged from Camp Carson, CO on July 24, 1954. Upon his return to North Dakota Cel attended the Bismarck Police Academy. He was a police officer in Grafton and a special deputy sheriff for Walsh County from 1962 - 1972. Cel moved to Jamestown and worked for the Stutsman County Sheriff's Department until he retired in 1987. He spent his winters in Mesa, AZ due to his health.

Cel was a life member of the VFW Post 760 and the the North Dakota Peace Officers Assn., a member of the American Legion and the Eagles and of the Buckhorn Elks of Mesa. His hobbies included hunting, fishing, camping, family vacations, collecting antiques and he loved to go to auction sales.

Cel is survived by his two children, Colleen Brazell and Jeff (Tammy) Novak both of Bismarck, ND, six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one brother-in-law, Ben Tupa, Grafton, ND, several nieces and nephews and his fiancee, Dorothy Speidel. He also raised two daughters, Doreen Petersen, Jamestown and Diane (Gary) Johnson, Fargo and their children, Brooke, Crystal and Cherish.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and two sisters.

Memorial Service: 11:00 AM, Monday, March 8, 2004 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown with Father John Fisher Kizito officiating.

No visitation is scheduled.

Burial: North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, North Dakota.
