Charles A. Russell, 85, Buchanan, North Dakota, died Wednesday, July 26, 2006 at Jamestown Hospital in Jamestown.
Charles was born January 29, 1921 at Trinity Hospital in Jamestown, ND, the son of Chelsea and Selma (Johnson) Russell. He grew up and attended school in the Buchanan, ND area, graduating from Buchanan High School. He entered the United States Army on February 13, 1943 in Bismarck, ND, serving in Guadalcanal. He was a member of the 535th ORD HM. Company and was discharged on January 29, 1946 at Fort Lewis in Washington.
Charles returned to North Dakota to farm in Plainview township, north of Buchanan. He married Natalie Zickuhr Pitts on December 15, 1971 in Las Vegas, NV. They made their home on the farm north of Buchanan for many years. She died October 5, 1980.
Charles served on many boards including Stutsman County State Bank, South Central Dakota Regional Council, Stutsman County Soil Conservation District, Buchanan Farmers Union Grain, American Heart Association - Dakota Affiliate, Jamestown Hospital, Stutsman County Commissioner, and the North Dakota State House. He served as President for the V.F.W. 9370 Buchanan, Central Dakota Farm Managers, Stutsman County Agriculture Improvement, Stutsman County Heart Association, Buffalo Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross and Central Valley Health Unit.
He is survived by a cousin, Janet Mork and family, Billings, MT and a nephew, Tom Keyser, Coeur d'Alene, ID.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and one sister, Mildred Keyser.
Memorial Service: 1:30PM, Monday, August 7, 2006 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown with Father John McGinnis officiating.
No Visitation is scheduled.
Burial: Buchanan Cemetery, Buchanan, ND at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Jamestown Hospital Hospice, Jamestown.
