Clarence Schuldheisz, 90, Jamestown, North Dakota, died Thursday, November 20, 2008 at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home in
Jamestown.
Mr. Schuldheisz was born November 24, 1917 at Kulm, ND, the son of Daniel and Ida Marie (Diegel) Schuldheisz. He grew up and attended school at Kulm, graduating from high school in 1935. He enrolled at NDSCS at Wahpeton, ND for the 1935-36 academic year. He was then employed in parttime work until joining Civilian Conservation Corps in 1937. He served in that organization for 15 months at sites in Idaho and Minnesota.
Returning to NDSCS in 1939 he completed studies and training in journalism, printing and linotype operation. He also earned an associate degree in liberal arts from the junior college department and graduated in 1941. He served his apprenticeship at The Killdeer Herald, Killdeer, ND, beginning in 1941 and remained in the printing and newspaper field for the next 38 years.
He married Cecelia Maier, Killdeer, at Dickinson, ND in 1943. They moved to Jamestown in 1944 and the following year to Kulm where he and his wife owned and operated The Kulm Messenger from March 1945 through June 1951. The family returned to Jamestown and he was employed at the Stutsman County Record for three years and then joined the production department of The Jamestown Sun, remaining there until 1970.
He and his wife moved to Fargo for two years and then to Beach, ND where he was editor-manager of the Golden Valley News. In 1977 they moved to Grafton, ND where he was a reporter for the Grafton Record. In 1980 he accepted employment as a resident care technician at the former Grafton State School. He and his wife retired in 1985 and returned to Jamestown to make their home.
He was a former member of the North Dakota Newspaper Association and a member of Concordia Lutheran Church. Beginning in 1988 he attended Jamestown College as a parttime student for several years pursuing studies in history and political science. He enjoyed golf and attending athletic events.
Clarence is survived by daughter, Carol Werner, Bismarck, ND; four grandchildren, four great-grandsons; two brothers, Erwin, Madelia, MN and Russell (Ardelle), Brainerd, MN; and one sister, Esther Parr, Canby, OR.
His wife died March 11, 1988 and a daughter, Linda, died February 2, 1990. His parents; two brothers, Benjamin and Allen; and one sister, Evangeline Meske, also preceded him in death.
Funeral Service: 10:00 AM, Monday, November 24, 2008 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Jamestown, with Pastor Thomas Eckstein officiating.
Visitation: 2:00 to 7:00 PM, Sunday, November 23, 2008 at the Eddy Funeral Home in Jamestown, ND.
