Clifford H. Heer

Clifford H. Heer, Jamestown, ND, died Friday, July 10, 2009 at his home surrounded by family in his 80th year.

Cliff was born July 21, 1929 in a little house north of Nickeus Park in Jamestown, the son of Chris P. and Martha (Hieb) Heer. He was raised and attended school in Jamestown, graduating from Jamestown High School in 1948. He worked as a brakeman for the Northern Pacific Railroad, until his National Guard Unit was called up during the Korean Conflict on January 6, 1951. His unit served at Camp Rucker, AL until March 10, 1952, when he was honorably discharged as a Master Sergeant and returned to Jamestown. On June 17, 1953, he married Lois "Chic" Smith at St. James Catholic Church. For 56 years, Cliff and Chic made their home on Third Avenue SW in Jamestown. Cliff continued working on the railroad as a conductor for Burlington Northern in both passenger and freight service. After 43 years of railroad service, he retired in 1991.

Cliff was a member of the American Legion, the Eagles and a lifetime member of the Jamestown Elks. As a master craftsman, he loved working with wood and refinishing antiques. A hockey enthusiast to the end, he also enjoyed football, fishing and a past cabin on Spiritwood Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Lois "Chic"; 4 children: Noreen (Rob) Nicol, Denver, CO; Doug (Sharon) Heer, Eugene, OR; Tom Heer, Eugene, OR; and Tracy (Paul) Monson, Jamestown, ND. He has 8 grandchildren: Brent Nicol, Erica Nicol, Garrett Hill, Ross Monson, Lily Heer, Christopher Heer, Lauren Heer, Ty Monson and 2 step-grandchildren: Katie Monson and Morgan Monson. He is also survived by his sister, Alma Donahue, Florida and sister-in-law, Jeanne Heer, Desert Palm, CA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert (Bob) Heer.

To honor Cliff's final wishes, there will be no services. At a later date, he will be laid to rest in Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to St. John's Academy or to Jamestown Hospital's Home Heath Department. The family thanks everyone for their kindness and support over the many years.
