David Orval Wegner, 80, Jamestown, ND, died Friday, August 15, 2014 at his home in Jamestown of natural causes. He was born November 19, 1933, the son of Gottfried and Bertha (Suko). David received an eighth grade education in a country school south of Cleveland until he joined the United States Army in 1954. He sustained an injury in 1955 and was honorably discharged in November 1956. He married Yvonne Letcher on June 1, 1956 in the Presbyterian Church in Jamestown.
David was a talented man. He built many buildings on the farm southwest of Jamestown where he and Yvonne farmed from 1957 until 1992. He also wired and rewired buildings and repaired the majority of the farm machinery. After meals he often sat thinking with his chin in his hand and would say, “If a guy were to…,” and from that came many ideas on how to remedy a situation such as an innovative grain removal system for grain bins.
When someone would tell him he could have been an engineer or a carpenter or an electrician he would say, “But I loved farming more.” David grew some beautiful crops over the years and milked up to 90 cows at one point.
Once he retired from farming, he and Yvonne sold the home place and David pursued his love of wildlife and created a wildlife sanctuary on the quarter of land across the road. He planted a shelterbelt, food plot dug a water hole and raised 200 pheasants each year for the past several years. For his efforts he and Yvonne earned a Stutsman County Conservation District Award.
David was also part of the Two-Cylinder Club and the Disabled American Veterans.
David was always busy with something whether it was constructing another building, planting another row of trees, restoring a John Deere, going to auction sales, reading or watching a good movie.
David is survived by Yvonne Wegner; five children, Dwight (Charla), Jamestown, Doreen, Arvada, CO, Darrel (Vicki), Jamestown, Dorinda (Greg) Anderson, Fergus Falls, MN, and Doran (and special friend, Sue), Jamestown; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Melvin (Agnes) , Jamestown, Elroy (Edress), Arizona, and Clifford (Stella), Arizona; a sister, Mae (Ernest) Williams, Jamestown; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gottfried and Bertha Wegner, Jr.; sister and brother-in-law, Lorene and Ronald Wanzek; and one great-grandchild.
