Donald was born December 14, 1933 on a farm near Jud, ND. He was the youngest of three children born to Donald and Viola Toay. He attended school at Glenmore Township School, Jud Public School, and Edgeley Public School, graduating from Edgeley High School in 1951. Donald met Elizabeth (Betty) Fode while in high school in Jud, ND and they were married on October 4, 1953, at the Congregational church in Jud, ND. After their marriage, they made their home on the family farm near Jud where he lived his entire life. He expanded the grain operation and built a dairy. He could always be found lending a helping hand to family and friends when needed. During his retirement years, he especially enjoyed harvesting soybeans with his sons.

Donald attended the Seventh-Day Adventist Church at Deisem and then Edgeley when the congregation built a new church. He was an active church member, teaching, singing in the choir, and serving as an Elder. In addition to being a Nodak Mutual insurance agent, he served on the Executive Committee for the ND Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists, the FHA Board, Township Board, and the Farm Bureau.

One of Donald’s favorite pastimes was playing and coaching baseball. He coached PeeWee, Babe Ruth, Jr Legion and Amateur League baseball teams. He played well into his 50’s and was priviliged to play with and coach all three of his sons, which was one of his greatest joys in life. Other things he enjoyed were family camping trips, fishing with family and friends, as well as hunting trips with his sons and extended family.

Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Betty, and parents. Survivors include five children: Barry (Vicki) Toay, Edgeley, ND; Brenda (Gary) Johnson, Annandale, MN; Bryce (Dawn) Toay, Edgeley, ND; Bart Toay, Fargo, ND; Becky (Scott) Hansen, Bowman, ND; grandchildren: Dalton (Lydia) Toay, Kaitlynn Toay, Tanner Toay, Krysta Johnson, Matthew (Hannah) Johnson, Bobbi (Jeremiah) Majerus, Kelli Toay, Corey (Aly) Toay, Brock Toay, Gwendolyn Toay, Wyatt Hansen, Truxton Hansen; four great-grandchildren: Aubrey, Andrew and Avery Johnson and Reese Toay; two sisters: Donna Carlson and Darlene Dawson, and “just-like-family”: Tim, Dulcie, Cameron and Arianna Hoff.
