Douglas Widener

Douglas Gene Widener of Jamestown, North Dakota, passed away at the Fargo Veteran’s Hospital on Monday, November 9, 2020 at the age of 76.

Doug was born May 4, 1944 in Jamestown, North Dakota, the son of Merle and Dorothy Widener. He grew up in Jamestown and graduated from Jamestown High School in 1962. He attended the University of Minnesota on a ROTC scholarship and upon graduation was commissioned to the United States Navy where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam, the first on a destroyer and the second as Commander of a fleet of river patrol boats.

On June 18, 1966 Doug was joined in marriage to Sheri Hacker. They were blessed with two children. After his military service, he was employed by Stop n’ Go Convenience Stores as an executive, and then owned his own company, Earthbound Landscaping both in Houston, Texas. After he retired he returned to Jamestown where he lived the remainder of his life.

Doug was an avid golfer, loved sports and was an enthusiastic card player. He was a voracious reader, well versed in any subject and was an animated story teller with a great sense of humor. Doug really enjoyed spending time with family and friends and was so proud of his children and grandchildren.

Doug is survived by his daughter, Kim Walker of Prior Lake, Minnesota and his grandchildren Kyle Walker and Shae Walker, ex-wife Sheri Hacker, and his two sisters Marlyce Miller and Debra (Lou) Bruce and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his son Tad Hacker, and his parents Merle and Dorothy Widener.

A celebration of life and internment will be held in the Spring of 2021.
