Edith Estelle Barnett Howe Hammond, 74, master gardener and people person extraordinaire, died Saturday, July 5, 2014, at her home in Cleveland, ND with loved ones by her side, following her five year battle with cancer. She was born February 20, 1940, in Hazen, ND to Vernon Valier and Leone Moxley Barnett.

Edith attended a rural school in Mercer County, ND until her family moved to Mandan, ND in 1954. She graduated from Mandan High School in 1958, Bismarck Junior College in 1960, and the University of North Dakota in 1967. She was a social worker in Grand Forks, ND before earning her Master?s Degree in Social Work from San Diego State in 1971. She was a social worker in Stutsman County, ND from 1971 until her retirement in 1999.

Edie touched the lives of so many, and spent a lifetime caring for others, especially her mother who lived with her for about 20 years until her mother?s death at age 99 in 2011.

Edie was inspired by any hobby that expressed her creativity, especially home remodeling, perennial gardening, scrapbooking, watercolor painting, doll houses, and stained glass. Her interests far outreached the time she had for the projects she envisioned. She left this world and the people whose lives she touched more beautiful by having shared herself in so many creative and loving ways.
