Edna I. Kirmis, 92, of Billings, MT, formerly Edgeley, ND, died Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Billings, MT.
Edna Isabel Johnson was born on June 12, 1918 at Jud, North Dakota the daughter of Mikkel Johnson and Cecilia (Hanson) Johnson. Edna, the youngest of four children, grew up on the farm and received her education through eighth grade in a rural school. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. At age thirteen Edna's father died as a result of an accident. Edna worked on the farm helping her mother and brother. Later she worked as a hired girl doing housework and childcare. As a young woman, Edna worked at the Federated Stores in Edgeley and LaMoure and at JC Penneys in Jamestown. On March 3, 1946 Edna married her war hero, Delbert Kirmis at Edgeley. They moved to a farm south of Berlin, ND. The next years were spent raising her family and helping Delbert on the farm until illness forced him to retire. Edna and Delbert moved to Edgeley in 1975. Shortly after celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary, Delbert passed away on April 17, 1986. Edna continued to live in Edgeley until 2000. She moved to Fargo, ND, then Billings, MT, LaGrange, KY, and back to Billings. Edna, a cancer survivor, enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, housekeeping, playing cards, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren, great- grandchildren, friends, and relatives. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Edgeley and was active in various church organizations and activities.
Survivors include her son, Harold and wife Carol of Billings, MT, daughters, Arlene and husband Andy (Buckley) of West Fargo, and Ellen and husband Ronald (Hegge) of Oklee, MN; Grandchildren Leigh Anne(Rick) Heinz, Richard(Kristi) Buckley, Susan (Steve) Speich, Bradley (Denise) Hegge, Ross Hegge, Lindsay (Michael) Delmore, Beth Kirmis, and Erin (Tim) Stein, Sharon Joramo, and Julie (Tim) Holmstrom; Great - grandchildren Tanner Heinz, Kayla Buckley, Ella and Josie Speich, Chase and Trevor Holmstrom, Jayah Nelson, Kylie Stein, and Jonathan Hegge, and several nieces and nephews.
Edna was preceded in death by her husband, parents, siblings Harry Johnson, Helen Miller, and Margaret Bedker; Grandson Christopher Kirmis and Great-grandson Kjad Joramo, a niece, and all of her sisters- in- laws and brothers- in - law.
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 26, 2011 at Zion Lutheran Church, Edgeley, ND with Rev. Alan Eppen officiating.
Visitation: One hour before the service at the church.
Burial: Mt. Hope Cemetery, Edgeley, ND.
