Edna Joy (Ley) Werth was born February 4, 1926 in Coldwater, ND, the daughter of Jacob R. and Selma (Junkert) Ley, Ashley, ND. She attended school in Ashley from grades 1-10. While in school she was active in tumbling and track.
On May 4, 1943, she married Leonard Harry Werth before the Justice of the Peace in Leola, SD. They made their first home at the Werth family farm south of Lehr, ND, for six months until they bought a farm of their own 14 miles south of Lehr. They raised chickens, ducks, milk cows and wheat and had a large garden. In the spring of 1947 Leonard and Edna moved to Jamestown and bought a house where Edna continued to reside until the time of her death.

Edna worked as Jean Porter’s personal assistant and housekeeper for many years. Later she worked as a custodian at Jamestown College from 1973 until 1991, in addition to being a personal caretaker for Gertrude Greeno. She was honored by Jamestown College when they dedicated the 1989 Homecoming activities to her. She was also responsible for maintenance at the downtown Ladies’ Club Room. After her retirement, she spent countless hours volunteering at Goodwill and also for the Salvation Army and their Thrift Store. She loved her work there and spent at least 15 years volunteering.
