Ernest E. Degroot

Ernest E. DeGroot, 78, Jamestown, N.D. died Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at his home in Jamestown, N.D.

Ernest was born July 9, 1924 in York, N.D., the son of Alexander and Mary (Halpenny) DeGroot. He grew up on the family farm and received his education in local schools.

Ernest entered the United States Army on October 25, 1944 in Minnewauken, N.D. and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was discharged on January 7, 1946 in Pusan, Korea. He re-enlisted in the Army on January 8, 1946 and served until July 12, 1947.

Ernest married Judith Fossen on October 8, 1947 in Maddock, N.D. Ernest attended the Hanson Auto School in Fargo, N.D. and worked in Cando, Rugby, N.D. and Billings, MT. They moved to Jamestown in 1962 where he worked for R.M. Stoudt, Inc. for 23 years. He retired in 1984.

Ernest was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he was honored for ushering for 25 years. He was a member of Ernest DeNault - Robertson American Legion Post #14 in Jamestown, N.D. His hobbies were restoring cars, riding motorcycles and snowmobiles, watching TV, and playing cards.

Ernest is survived by his wife, Judith DeGroot, of Jamestown, N.D.; four children; Earl DeGroot, of Cheyenne, WY; Yvonne (Gary) Schensted, of Burnsville, MN; Leslie DeGroot, of Jamestown, N.D.; Patricia DeGroot, of San Diego, CA; four grandchildren, Samuel DeGroot, Sara DeGroot, Candice Schensted, and Peter Schensted; one brother, William DeGroot, of Spokane, WA; three sisters-in-law, Hazell DeGroot, of Jamestown, N.D.; Delores Dahlstrom of Bismarck, N.D.; Lenora Newman, of Fessenden, N.D.; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, George Christopher and Allwin DeGroot, two sisters, Margaret Schwartz and Johanna Muffenbier.

Funeral Service: 11:00 A.M. - Saturday, September 7, 2002 at Trinity Lutheran Church - Jamestown, with Rev. Terry Anderson officiating.

Prayer Service: 5:00 P.M. - Friday, September 6, 2002 at Eddy Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, N.D.

Visitation: Friday, September 6, 2002 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M. Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, N.D.

Burial: Highland Home Cemetery - Jamestown, N.D.
