Eugene Carter

July 17, 1917 — December 7, 2005

Eugene A. Carter, 88, of Woodworth, North Dakota, left us as light dawned on December 7, 2005 at Hi-Acres Manor Nursing Home in Jamestown.

Eugene Albert was born to William Harlow and Lillian (Walters) Carter on July 17, 1917, the third of twelve children. He was raised in the Medina area and attended school through the eighth grade. He spent two years in the CCC's in Wishek, ND, Sturgis, SD, Hill City, SD and Medora, ND. He returned to the Woodworth area and started farming in 1938. He and Edna Deede were married September 6, 1940 and they farmed one mile west of Woodworth. He also worked for the railroad. In 1972, Eugene was appointed postmaster at Woodworth, a position he held until his retirement in 1982. Eugene served as township assessor, on the school board, County FSA and County FHA boards, church board, and was a member of the town council for several years as well as serving as mayor.

Eugene is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Dennis and Mary Carter, Carrington, ND; a daughter-in-law, Irene Carter, Bismarck, ND; six grandchildren, Darren, Cory (Michelle), Carrie (Andrew) McKnight, Arlynn (Jen), Kelly and Donelle; two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Keira McKnight; sisters, Marian (William) Holmes, Shirley Zimmerman, Ferne Chapman, Gladyce Erling, Yvonne LaPorte; brother Winfred Carter and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edna, parents, son, Willard Carter, three brothers, Cameron, Duane, William and sister, Maridell.

Memorial Service: 2:00 PM, Sunday, December 11, 2005 at the Woodworth ELCA Church with Deaconess Candyce Wick officiating.

No visitation is scheduled.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Gem Cemetery Fund in Woodworth, ND.
