Evelyn M. Goudie

Evelyn M. Goudie, 97, Jamestown, North Dakota died Sunday, October 24, 2004 at her home.

Evelyn M. Goudie was born to Adam George and Anna (Reinke) Mohr on December 6, 1906 on her parent's farm in Spring Lake Township, Hand County, South Dakota. She was the youngest of four daughters. She began school in a small country school in Spring Lake Township. When she was about eight years of age, the family moved to Miller, SD where her father was the new Hand County Deputy Sheriff. She graduated from Miller High School in 1924 with a partial scholarship to an acting school in Chicago. However, she chose to stay in Miller where she worked as a telephone operator. She married Harold R. Goudie on August 25, 1934 in Long Pine, NE. During WW II, the family lived in Racine, WI, where Harold worked at Wisconsin Screw Co. as part of the war effort. In 1946, Harold took advantage of a business opportunity and the family moved to Valley City, ND. After Harold's death, Evelyn moved to Kent, WA to be near her sons until her sisters' illness called her back to South Dakota. In January of 2001, she moved to Jamestown, ND to make her home with her daughter and son-in-law.

Evelyn was a member of Woodbine Chapter #4, Order of Eastern Star (O.E.S.) of Valley City, ND for over 50 years. She served the Chapter in many capacities. She went through the chairs, serving as Worthy Matron in 1956 and as Chapter Secretary from 1961-1977. She also served as District Deputy for District #6 in 1959-1960 and was a Grand Page in 1966. She was Mother Advisor of Rainbow Girls from 1951 until approximately 1958. She also headed the O.E.S. Association of Secretary/Treasurers in 1974.

She was a long time member of First Congregational Church, United Church of Christ in Valley City, ND, maintaining membership through her residency in Kent, WA and Jamestown, ND. She attended Trinity Lutheran Church in Jamestown during the last few years.

Evelyn was a member of the first board of the ND Winter Show Women's Division, serving the community of Valley City in this manner for many years. She was also elected to the secretary's position in the newly formed chapter of A.A.R.P. for a one year term.

While in Kent, WA, Evelyn became a member of Chaper GV, P.E.O. maintaining the membership and the connection with her P.E.O. sisters after her return to North and South Dakota. She also served as President of the Senior Drill Team of Renton, WA. This drill team won numerous trophies and received a standing ovation when they appeared as guest performers at an international event for teen drill teams at the Collesium in Los Angeles, CA.

Evelyn had a lifelong interest in learning, in art and in writing poetry. She took several classes from Valley City State College while in North Dakota and also earned college credits from Green River Community College in Auburn, WA.

Evelyn is survived by two sons, David (Geraldine) Goudie of Kent, WA and Robert (Claire Lewis) Goudie of Covington, WA, one daughter, Jacqualene (Harley) Trefz of Jamestown, five grandchildren, Richard Johnson, Jamestown; Laura (John) Wetsch, Raleigh, NC; Susan (Kevin) Trautman, Riverdale, ND; Ryan (Kristin) Goudie, Dupont, WA and Erin Goudie, Federal Way, WA, one step-grandchild, Stephanie (Lester) Schlosser, Jamestown, eight great-grandchildren, two step-great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters and one grandson.

Memorial Service: 11:00 AM, Thursday, October 28, 2004 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown with Rev. David Eppelsheimer officiating.

No visitation is scheduled.

Prayer Service: 5:00 PM, Wednesday, October 27, 2004 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel.

Burial: Woodbine Cemetery, Valley City, North Dakota.
