Evelyn J. Nielsen passed away Tuesday, October 5, 2010, surrounded by her loving family at Eventide Hi-Acres Manor, Jamestown, ND.
Evelyn Jessie Johnson was born on May 14, 1918, Cooperstown, ND to Edward and Nettie (Stromme) Johnson. After attending school in Cooperstown, she moved to Jamestown where she met Edwin M. Nielsen whom she married September 1, 1941. Evelyn and Ed had three children, McKinley “Mac” , and twin daughters, Janis “Joanie” and Janet “Jeanie” . She became widowed in 1955 and was both father and mother to her children.
Evelyn was employed by the US Postal Service at the Jamestown Post Office. She particularly enjoyed her position as window clerk and she became a familiar and friendly face to many. She retired from the Postal Service in 1972.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church plus numerous organizations including VFW Auxiliary past president and state officer, American Legion Auxiliary, DAV Auxiliary , Eagles Auxiliary, National Association of Retired Federal Employees, Sons of Norway, Jay Notes (women’s choral group), and Frontier Village Board. Evelyn loved music and had the gift of playing the piano by ear. She enjoyed singing and dancing and passed her love of music to her children. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren and new great-granddaughter. Evelyn was also a huge fan of the Minnesota Twins, spending many hours listening to and watching their games.
Evelyn is survived by three children, McKinley “Mac” ,Jamestown, Janis “Joanie” Mork (Doug) Bismarck, and Janet “Jeanie” Neumiller (Daryl), Jamestown, and step daughters, Connie Ave’Lallemont, St. Paul, MN and Charlene Rae, Sioux City, IA; two sisters, Doris Ohman, Anaconda, MT and Adeline Rise, El Paso, TX; six grandchildren, Michael R. (Michelle) Neumiller, Angela J. Neumiller, Erik A. (Rebecca) Mork, Jennie E. Mork, Jeana L. (Jon) Mork-Youness and Julie A. (Patrick) Tobkin; one great-granddaughter, Macey Neumiller; numerous nieces and nephews and many close friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, four sisters, and two great-grandchildren.
We will cherish her memory and celebrate her life. She will be dearly missed by those who knew and loved her.
