Florence Ethel Betsch, 96, life-long resident of Jamestown, was born May 28th, 1918 to Guy and Martha McCommon in Ypsilanti, North Dakota. Loving Wife, Mom, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Aunt, passed away on November 15, 2014 at Eventide at High-Acres Manor.
She enjoyed a very long and wonderful life and was a strong yet loving, inspirational example to her three children, Sandra Hurlbert and Steve Sanchez, Colorado Springs, Co., Roxanne Medema and her husband Bill, Great Falls, MT., and Ronald Betsch and his wife Sandy Yates, Colorado Springs, CO. Her Grandchildren are, Debbie Epler and her husband Paul, Colorado Springs, CO.; Preston M. Hurlbert Jr., Colorado Springs, CO.; Stephanie Medema, Peoria, AZ.; Chelsea Betsch, Pueblo, CO., Elliott Betsch of Colorado Springs, CO.; Skyler Betsch, Colorado Springs, CO.; and Noah Sanchez and his wife Brenna, Colorado Springs, CO. Her Great Grandchildren are, Amber Epler, Colorado Springs, CO.; Taya Hurlbert, Colorado Springs, CO.; Brendon Hurlbert, Colorado Springs, CO.; Oscar Sanchez, Colorado Springs, CO., and Hynsley Sanchez, Colorado Springs, CO. She was a beloved Aunt to so many nieces and nephews and their families, all equally loved and cherished by her.
Florence was preceded in death by her husband Aesop Betsch of 49 years. Florence and Aesop met while both were working at The Palace Cafe, were married in Colorado Springs at the United Church of Christ Congregational September 27th, 1942 during World War II and before Aesop shipped out to Europe for duty in the Army. After the war, they returned to Jamestown, to start their family. She was also preceded in death by all of her brothers and sisters, and also survived by two brothers-in-law; Michael "Mick" Hogan, and Howard Zink.
Jamestown grew as she grew, and Florence was proud to recite her clear memories: working at memorable icons of Jamestown's past such as The Palace Café, Brown's Drive Inn, and later as manager of the Ice Cream Shop at Country Boy Dairy; and joyful outings with friends and family to the parks in Jamestown, and to Spiritwood Lake. She was active with the various school PTA's as her children grew, the High School DECA program during her years at Country Boy, and was especially proud of her membership and service with her fellow Sisters in the VFW Post 760 Auxiliary, not only as a past Auxiliary President, but was active with the Junior Girls as well. In later years, she enjoyed going to the Legion and Amateur games, and for many years with her sister Darlene, they volunteered serving hot chocolate for the Parks & Recreation sponsored sleigh rides. Her joyful warmth will be long remembered.
The visitation will be on Thursday, November 20th, 2014 from 1p.m. to 6p.m. at Eddy Funeral Home.
Services will held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ with the Reverend Martin Nussbaum officiating at 2p.m. on Friday November 21st, 2014. Reception to follow in the church basement.
Burial will be at Highland Home Cemetery tentatively planned for the Spring.
