Florence Burkhardt

Florence Mathews Fisher Burkhardt, 86, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2024, with her loving family by her side.

Florence was born February 1, 1938, in Akeley, Minnesota to Wayne and Myrtle (Batteen) Mathews.  She attended farm schools in Stutsman County and briefly attended school in California while living there.  She moved back to North Dakota and attended Jamestown Public Schools.  She proudly obtained her GED at the age of 40.  She married Lee R. Fisher in 1954 and together they had four beautiful children.

In 2005, she married Norman W. Burkhardt and they made their home in Jamestown.  Together, they lived out the remainder of their happy lives and shared their beautiful, unconditional, and inspirational love with their families and all the staff and residents at Ave Maria Village.

Florence worked at Jamestown Hospital for 10 years and the North Dakota State Hospital for 21 years until she retired.  She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary for 15 years.  She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, reading, and working with her garden and flowers.

Florence is survived by her four children: Debra (Mark) Bischoff, Jamestown, ND; Gregory Fisher, Fargo, ND; Jerry (Lora) Fisher, Jamestown, ND; and Bruce (Kathy) Fisher, Yankton, SD; 10 grandchildren: Jack MacArthur; Alysia (Scott) Rufsvold; Amy Sjaaheim; Tiffany (Christopher) Flitton; Naomi Mitzel; Justin (Jenny) Fisher; Ryan (Tawnya) Fisher; Rachel (Blake) Krapp; April (Keith) Tompkins; Mandy (Mike) Ekeren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild born just two months ago; step-daughter Heather (Cory) Haugen; brother Richard Perleberg; and brother-in-law Ellan Hinsz.

Florence was preceded in death and embraced in heaven by her adoring husband, Norman, her parents Wayne and Myrtle, stepfather Albert Perleberg, sister Barb Hinsz, brother Wayne Mathews, sister-in-law Je’re Mathews, nephew Brent Mathews, and great-grandson, Jacob Williams.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 19, 2024 at Eddy Funeral Home with Pastor Stephanie Gossett officiating.  Florence will be cremated and laid to rest with her husband Norman at the Fargo National Cemetery, Fargo, ND at a later date.
