Florence Sletten

Florence Sletten, 92, resident of the Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown, North Dakota passed away Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Essentia Health in Fargo, North Dakota.
Florence was born September 13, 1924 on a small farm near Binford, North Dakota to her parents Maria (Vatne, Sharpe) and Johnnes Wathne both originally from Norway.
Florence graduated from Cooperstown High School as her class valedictorian in 1942 and received her teaching certificate from Jamestown College in 1946. Florence's first teaching position was in Plentywood, Montana where in addition to her classroom duties she was the girls' basketball coach despite having never played basketball. Florence continued her teaching career in both Watford City and Beach, North Dakota and ultimately settled in Jamestown, North Dakota where she taught and eventually retired from the Jamestown public schools. After retiring from teaching she worked as an assistant librarian at the Jamestown public library. While living in Jamestown Florence met and married the love of her life Harvey Sletten on December 20, 1969.
Florence was an avid reader and writer. Her commitment to her daily devotions was a demonstration of her strong Christian faith. In addition to her strong faith and loving devotion to Harvey and her family, she loved her dogs Marco and Missy. During her many years in Jamestown she was an active member of the Temple Baptist Church and in her final years she was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Cooperstown.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harvey, brothers Irvin Sharpe and Maurice Wathne, sister-in-law Dorcas Wathne and grandsons Mark Miller and Brad Sletten. She is survived by step children Bonnie (Jim) Miller and Jim (Betty) Sletten, nephews Larry (Nicky) Wathne and Bart (Cheryl) Wathne, several grand and great grandchildren as well as grand and great grand nieces and nephews and lots of cousins.

Funeral service: 11:00 AM, Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Cooperstown, ND with Pastor Gary Lundberg, officiating.
Visitation: one hour before service at church.
Spring Burial: Sunset Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
