Floyd Brown

Floyd A. Brown, 81, Montpelier, North Dakota died Tuesday, April 12, 2005 at his home in Montpelier.

Floyd was born on October 13, 1923 in Sharlow Township, Stutsman County, North Dakota the son of Stephen William and Ella (Newman) Brown. Floyd grew up in a family of 11 children, 7 boys and 4 girls. He attended grade school in Sharlow and Millarton schools, graduating from Jamestown High School in 1941. After high school he joined the U.S. Marine Corp. and served with the Marine 5th Division. He received the Purple Heart in the Pacific Campaign in World War II for being wounded in Iwojima, Japan. He was discharged on July 10, 1946. He returned to attend college and received his BS degree in Animal Science at NDSU in 1951.

In 1950 Floyd married Jean Anne Malkmus in Fargo. They moved to a farm near Tappen, ND and in 1954 moved to a farm near Millarton, ND where they lived until 1974. During this time six children were born to them.

Floyd taught science at the Montpelier High School from 1959 until 1972. In 1973 he purchased the Stott Grocery Store and remodeled it into the Circle 13 Bar & Lounge. He then moved the Grocery Store across the street before selling it. He operated the Circle 13 for 10 1/2 years before selling it in 1983. He served as mayor of Montpelier from 1978 to 1982, and also served on the Montpelier School Board from 1979 to 1982. Floyd was associated with the forming of the Montpelier Teen Canteen, the Montpelier Buffalo Club, the Montpelier Woodcutters Association and the Montpelier Betterment Club. He is a member of the Montpelier Lutheran Church.

Floyd is survived by his wife, Jean of Montpelier, his six children, Rebecca (Daryl) Hayes, Spearfish, SD; Galen (Linda) Brown, rural Jamestown; Terril Kastet, rural Montpelier; Julie (Larry) Gruenstein, Montpelier; Stephen (Dianne) Brown, Jamestown and Lisa Brown, Ft. Ransom, ND, 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, two brothers, Darrel Brown and Richard (Bea) Brown, two sisters-in-law, Rose Brown and Syble Brown and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and four brothers.

Funeral Service: 10:00 AM, Saturday, April 16, 2005 at the Montpelier Lutheran Church, Montpelier, ND with Rev. Norman Winkelman.

Visitation: 1:00 to 8:00 PM, Friday, April 15, 2005 at the Eddy Funeral Home.

Prayer Service: 7:00 PM, Friday, April 15, 2005 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel.

Burial: Brown Family Cemetery, Montpelier, North Dakota.
