Francis Orr

Francis Orr, 87, Jamestown, North Dakota, died Saturday, September 26, 2009 at Ave Maria Village in Jamestown.

Francis was born March 25, 1922 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, the son of Marion D. and Helen (Rigdon) Orr. The family moved to a farm south of Jamestown in 1929. He attended country schools in Woodbury and Corwin townships, while helping on the family farm. Francis was a party of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Black Hills of South Dakota for 15 months in 1940-41. He joined the US Army on October 14, 1942 and served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of Opeations, New Guinea, Philippine Islands. On December 23, 1945 he was discharged from the service and returned to North Dakota and farming. Francis and Doris Johnson were married on February 1, 1951 in Jamestown. He worked construction with R.F. Thome of Jamestown until August 1, 1961. Then he was employed for Accoustical Ceiling Construction, Flament, Ulman, Inc. in Moorhead, MN for 35 years, from where he retired.

Francis was a member of the Basilica of St. James, the American Legion, and a life member of the Elks, Knights of Columbus, and VFW Post 760 all of Jamestown. He was Post Commander for 1977-78 and District 7 Commander for 2 years, 1991-93. He served with the VFW Color Guard for 25 years. He was also a life member of the Military Order of Cooties where he was the North Dakota State Grand Commander in 1988-89.

Francis is survived by his wife, Doris, Jamestown; three sons, Gary (Sandie) Orr, Jamestown, Doug (Terri) Orr, Jamestown, Randy (Barb) Orr, Mandan, ND; one daughter, Darla Fliflet, Cooperstown, ND; 15 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Floyd (Ellen) Orr, Jamestown, Cliff (Val) Orr, Ypsilanti, ND and Paul (Dorie) Orr, East Grand Forks, ND; and three sisters, Marge Davis, Ypsilanti, Fern Aldrich, Jamestown and Vonnie (Darrell) Entzminger, Jamestown.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son in infancy; infant great-grandson, Gavin Rodgers; three brothers, Meredith, Maurice and Robert; one sister, Virginia; and son-in-law, Scott Fliflet.

Funeral Mass: 2:00 PM, Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Basilica of St. James with Father Al Bitz officiating.

Visitation: 1:00 to 7:00 PM, Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at the Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, ND.

Vigil: 7:00 PM, Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at the Eddy Funeral Chapel.

Burial: Calvary Cemetery, Jamestown, North Dakota
