Fred Bartle, 88, Edgeley, ND, died Saturday, November 27, 2010 at Eventide at Hi-Acres Manor.
Lloyd Fred Bartle was born April 16, 1922 on the family farm in Wano Township near Edgeley, ND, the son of Ben and Ella (Hird) Bartle. He was raised on the farm near Edgeley and attended the Wano Township School #3. After his schooling, he worked on the family farm and then moved to Anamoose, ND, where he worked on the Schieman Farm. He later moved to California to work. He joined the United States Navy and served in Hawaii. After serving in the Navy, he returned to Edgeley, ND and began farming with his father and later took over the operation of the farm. On June 6, 1954, he married Gertrude Yonker at Norwich, ND and they made their home on the farm.
Fred was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church where he served on several boards. He also served on the Edgeley School Board; was the Wano Township Clerk from 1954 to 1980 and was a 4H leader from 1969 to 1976. Fred loved to travel and enjoyed creating word search puzzles. He published the Willow Grove Church History and wrote his life's history and short stories about his life.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude, Edgeley, ND; 5 children: Deborah Gumeringer, Phoenix, AZ; Michael (Patty) Bartle, Edgeley, ND; Kathy (Dan) Thorstad, Sun Prairie, WI; Judy Bartle, Portland, OR; Susan Bartle, Jamestown, ND; 9 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren and a brother, Art (Adeline) Bartle, Casper, WY.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters: Mildred Heinrich, Ruby Bartle and June Aune and 5 brothers: Wendell, Marvin, Donald, Wilbur and Vernon.
