Fred Gerber was born January 3, 1917 on the family farm in rural Napoleon, ND, the son of Mathias and Anna Gerber. He was raised and attended school in rural Napoleon. In his teen years, he worked on various sugar beet farms in Montana and in the late 1930's, farmed around the Napoleon area. In 1941, he joined the United States Army Air Corps, serving until 1945. When granted a furlough, he would return to Napoleon harvest his crops. Following his discharge, he returned to Napoleon, ND and continued farming. On January 2, 1948, he married Kay Snopko and they settled on their own farm southwest of Jamestown, ND. Fred retired from farming in 1989, but continued custom combining for several years. Kay died in 1989. Fred continued to live on his farm until the present.
He was a member of St. Mathias Catholic Church, Windsor, ND.
Survivors include a daughter, Cecelia (Dave) Collins, Gilby, ND; 2 grandsons: Clint (Dawn) Collins, Lodi, WI; Doug (Leslie) Collins, Loveland, CO; 4 great-grandchildren: Jacob, Matthew, Theadora and Luke Collins, Lodi, WI; a sister, Marcella Rose, Hemet, CA and a brother, Herman Gerber, Fargo, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers: Emil, Art and Arnold, and a sister, Margaret Jessen.
Funeral - 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 15, 2006 at St. Mathias Catholic Church, Windsor, ND.
Prayer Service - 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 14, 2006 at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, ND
Visitation - Noon to 7:00 p.m. Monday, August 13, 2006 at Lisko Funeral Chapel, Jamestown, ND and 1 hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
Interment - St. Pauline's Cemetery, Windsor, ND
