George W. Nelson, Jr., 83, Jamestown, North Dakota died Saturday, January 2, 2010 at St. Alexius Hospital in Bismarck, ND, after a long battle with cancer and heart disease.
George was born June 24, 1926 at Jamestown, the son of George and Lena (Albrecht) Nelson, Sr., and was the youngest of three children. He grew up in Courtenay and later moved to Jamestown, graduating from Courtenay High School. On August 26, 1946 George married Rita Siebert in Courtenay. George worked trucking cattle and grain until 1948 when he became employed by Standard Oil (later Amoco) as an agent and a tanker driver in Jamestown. In 1968 George retired from Amoco because of an eye injury. He later worked for Wright Trucking.
George and Rita were blessed with two children; Georgia \""Snookie\"" in 1948 and Albert \""Buck\"" in 1949.
George served on the Courtenay School Board, the city town board, St. Mary's Catholic Church board and as a rural fireman. He enjoyed and was involved in baseball and basketball. George loved fishing, all types of hunting, making fishing lures, and working in his shop and yard.
George never hesitated to help a friend and was a very faithful, dedicated neighbor.
George is survived by his wife of 63 years, Rita, Jamestown; daughter and son-in-law, Georgia and Wayne Strand, Minot, ND; son, Albert Nelson, Bismarck, ND; sister-in-law, Dolores Wanzek, Courtenay; brother-in-law, Gary Reeves, New Mexico; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marion Nelson and Dorothy Buchanan; sister-in-law, Lorraine \""Toody\"" Reeves; and two brothers-in-law, Raymond Buchanan and Leonard Wanzek.
George will be greatly missed by his friends and family.
