George Swanson

George A. Swanson, 75, Jamestown, North Dakota died Monday, September 12, 2005 at his home under hospice care.

George Albert Swanson was born December 5, 1929 at Mounds Park Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, the son of George Alexander and Alice Standish (Chandler) Swanson. He graduated from St. Paul Johnson High School in the spring of 1948. George attended the University of Minnesota from 1948 to 1950. He served as a Staff Sargeant in the United States Air Force during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954 and was discharged from the United States Air Force Reserve as a Technical Sargeant.

He attended the State University of New York Dental Lab School from October 1951 to August 1952.

On August 5, 1952 George married Marlyn Jones in St. Paul.

He worked for Boos Dental Lab in Minneapolis from 1954 to 1955. George attended the University of Minnesota from the winter of 1955 to the fall of 1960 and graduated with an Associate of Arts Degree and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology. He enrolled in the University of Minnesota Graduate School from 1960 to 1962 and worked as a Research Assistant in the Department of Entomology and Economic Zoology.

From 1962 to 1966 George worked as a Research Fishery Biologist for North Central Reservoir Investigations, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Yankton, South Dakota.

They moved to Jamestown in 1966 and until his retirement in 1992 George worked as a Research Aquatic Biologist and a Certified Research Wildlife Biologist for Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Jamestown.

During his working years he authored publications which included book chapters and articles in scientific journals.

George was a member of The Wildlife Society, The Ecological Society of America, The American Society of Limnology and Oceanography, The American Benthological Society, The American Fisheries Society, The National Society of Wetlands Scientists, The North Dakota Academy of Scientists and The North Dakota Natural Science Society. He was a member of the American Legion and of Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown, where he taught Sunday School for many years and served on church committees and on the church council and was a past Vice President of the Men of Trinity.

George enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening and spending time with family.

George is survived by his wife, Marlyn of Jamestown, two daughters, Sandra (William) Law, Fargo, ND and Lorie (Dana) Fredrickson, Minneapolis, MN and five grandchildren, Allison, Kathryn and Nicholas Law and Trenton and Kyla Fredrickson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Shirley Jean Syvertsen and a grandson, Aaron Morgan Law.

Funeral Service: 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 17, 2005 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown with Rev. Darrell Schultz officiating.

Visitation: 7:00 to 9:00 PM, Friday, September 16, 2005 at the Eddy Funeral Home, Jamestown, North Dakota.

Entombment: 3:00 PM, Saturday, September 17, 2005 at the Riverside Cemetery Mausoleum in Fargo, North Dakota.
