Georgene "Gene" Mckenzie

Georgene “Gene” Joos McKenzie, 88, Wimbledon, ND passed away Sunday, February 4, 2018 at Ave Maria Village.

Georgene Joan Williams was born December 5, 1929 in Grand Rapids, LaMoure County, ND daughter of Charles and Margaret Williams. She attended Grand Rapids school, graduating from LaMoure High School in 1949 and St. Joseph’s School of Nursing in 1952. Gene worked one year at Maddock Hospital, Maddock, ND. In 1953, she married Andrew L.P. Joos and rasied three children, Laurene (James) Grabowski, Andrew L. Joos, and Kathy (Dallas) Strand.

She lived and worked on the Joos family farm until Andrew L.P.’s death in 1981. Gene took a nursing course in 1982-1983 and worked at the North Dakota State Hospital until her marriage to Arvid McKenzie in 1983. They moved to Courtenay, ND and wintered in Mesa, AZ. In 1990, Arvid passed away and Gene moved to Wimbledon.

Gene was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. She was Sunday School Superintendent, United Methodist Women’s President and was involved with Mission Projects.

In 2005, she suffered a stroke which limited her in many things. Gene loved her children and grandchildren and enjoyed going on many tours visiting friends and helping others.

She is survived by three sisters; Melvina “Willie” Christ, Hamilton, MT, Eldean (Harvey) Lattau, Maynard, MN, and Del Rose Felton, Lakewood, CO, sister-in-law; Bev Williams, Fargo, ND, eight grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.

Gene is preceded in death by her parents, husbands; Andrew L.P. and Arvid, brother, Ed Williams, three brothers-in-law; Robert “Bud” Christ, Jerry Felton, and Warren Ernie, and sister-in-law, Ruby Ernie.

Funeral Service : 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 10, 2018 at St John’s United Methodist Church in Wimbledon, ND with Pastor Becky Holten Officiating.

Visitation : 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 10, 2018 at St John’s United Methodist Church in Wimbledon.

Spring Burial : Prairie View Cemetery, Wimbledon, ND.
