Geraldine Weiss

June 13, 1922 — December 8, 2009

Geraldine (Gerry) Weiss, 87, Jamestown, North Dakota, died December 8, 2009 in Jamestown.

Geraldine Emma Rose was born June 13, 1922 to Herman and Henrietta (Collard) Rose at Wimbledon, ND. She was educated at Pierce Township rural school. As a young woman, Gerry worked at the Wimbledon Hospital and also did housekeeping and child care for many Wimbledon area families. She met the love of her life and future husband, Frank Weiss, at a dance in Clementsville. They married on December 16, 1941. Together they farmed and made their home near Spiritwood until Frank died in January 1993. Gerry hauled many, many bushels of oats, wheat and barley to elevators in Spiritwood, Urbana and Clementsville during harvest time. She also shared in the livestock chores in the early years. In the later years they spent many winters traveling, visiting both their families in Washington State and California. Gerry stayed on the farm with her precious dogs for nearly a decade after Frank’s death until a broken hip forced her to move to Jamestown where she resided at the Heritage Centre for the last six years.

She will be remembered as a feisty, sharp-witted, smiley lady who enjoyed a good argument. She will also be remembered for her very famous fried chicken dinners. Although Gerry had no children of her own, she was like a mother to several Spiritwood area children and many of her nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed!

Geraldine is survived by a brother and two sisters, Ronald (Joan) Rose, Wimbledon, ND, Audrey Severson, Huntington Beach, California and Doris Ann (Charles) Hightower, Chula Vista, California; a sister-in-law, Dorothy Rose, Whittier, California, and an Aunt, Margaret Rose, Valley City, and many nieces, nephews and their children.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank, a sister Marjorie Steckler, a brother James Rose, brothers-in-law, Leo Steckler and Milton Severson, also two nephews Gerry Leo Steckler and Daniel Joseph Steckler.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the James River Humane Society.
