Gertrude Marie (Yonker) Bartle
September 28, 1932 – July 23, 2023
Gertrude was born September 28, 1932 at her grandfather’s farm, the daughter of Edwin and Clara Yonker. She lived there with her Mother until she was four years old when the family moved to Van Hook.
Playmates during her early childhood were her two cousins, Joan and Pat Bergstad.
School days started in Van Hook and continued in Norma, Omemee, and Norwich. Junior and senior high school years were spent in Granville where she graduated as co-salutatorian. St. Joseph School of Nursing in Minot was where she received her nursing education. September of 1953 Gertrude accepted a position at the State Hospital in Jamestown. It was only a week later, on a blind date, that she met Lloyd Fred Bartle. A month later Fred proposed. They were married June 6, 1954. Gert now focused on making a home on the family farm and all the duties that come with being a farm wife. She became involved in the Willow Grove community and church.
Fred and Gert increased the family with five children: Debbie (Don) Gumeringer who had four kids: Jeffery with sons Eddie and Riley; Gregory (Yihan) with children Tillman and Kyla; Jeremy (Tracy) with son Donald; and Sara (Harold) Benne with daughters Alice and Claire. Mike (Patty) with children Emma (Tyler) Tufte and daughter Adriana; Ben (deceased),
(Brandy) with daughter Bella; Nicholas with son Ryker. Brandy Erickson added to the Bartle family with children with her second husband,
Marshall: Mace, Brystol and Macoy. Kathy (Dan) Thorstad and their children Amanda and Joshua (Laura States) and daughters Kaitlyn and Jillian. Daughters Judy; and Susan (Larry Malsom).
Gert enjoyed her 4-H years so much that when her children were that age, she was a 4-H leader. Church and church activities were a central part of the family life. Gert was active in Ruth Circle and United Methodist Women at Wesley United Methodist Church. Gert was a member of Country Hearts Club for many years. She was active in women’s bowling.
Once the children were older, Gert returned to her nursing career, nights at LaMoure Hospital. She was a public health nurse for Central Valley Public Health, serving LaMoure and McIntosh counties. In that role she traveled to senior centers providing foot cares, immunizations and other wellness programs and education. Following retirement from nursing, Gert was the site manager at the Edgeley Senior Center for a few years.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents Edward and Clara Yonker, her husband, Fred, a son-in-law, Don Gumeringer, and a grandson, Benjamin J. Bartle.
She is survived by her children: Debbie, Mike, Kathy, Judy and Susan and several cousins.
