Gideon Schlecht,97, Medina, died Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at the Cavalier County Memorial Hospital in Langdon, ND. Gideon Schlecht, son of Rudolph and Magdalena (Gunsch) Schlecht was born March 29, 1922 at rural Fredonia, ND. When a child, the family moved to the Medina area where he attended school. In 1942 Gideon was inducted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Europe as a truck driver in the heavy artillery division of the 3rd Army Division. He received his discharge in 1946. He returned home and worked for his father for several years, then purchased the farm belonging to his uncle, August Gunsch, four and one-half miles east of Medina.
On July 6, 1951, Gideon married Viola Simmons and they lived on that farm until 1960 when they bought the Julius Osterman farm in Peterson Township. His wife, Viola passed away on May 6th, 1996. Gideon continued to live on the farm until 2010 when he moved to Osnabrock, ND to live with his daughter, son-in-law and family. In December of 2017 he moved into Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon.
Gideon was a charter member of Faith Evangelical Church in Crystal Springs. He was an usher for many years and always had a friendly smile and handshake for everyone. Gideon supported many missionaries through the years and was privileged to go to Brazil, South America in 1973 with Men For Missions to work at the mission compound. Gideon also enjoyed music, especially playing his guitar, harmonica and singing with the Schlecht family singers.
He is survived by his son Marlowe (Tammy), Medina, two daughters, Marilyn (Curtis) Dikoff, Bismarck, Maureen (Don) Smith of Osnabrock and two sisters Leona Moser and Alvina Broste of Bismarck. Grandchildren, Rochelle(Damon) Bosche, Medina, Brandon(Jenny)Schlecht, Medina, Trisha(Russell)Fennern, Minot, Jenna (Pippen)Guerrier, Greenwood, IN, Jennifer(Robert) Nordin, Oxbow, SK, Jeremy(Tamara)Curtis, Bismarck, Jessica(Charlie)Young, Bismarck, Julia(Steve)Singer, Bismarck, Mikaela(Olnick)Hultstrand, International Falls, MN, Megan Smith Devils Lake, and Dalen Smith, Osnabrock. Great-grandchildren Makenna, Alaina and Kara Bosche, Reanna and Kennedy Schlecht, Briggs and Porter Fennern, Ronan Guerrier, Geoff, Shawnee, and Mark Nordin, Brooke and Jase Curtis, Braeden, Dawson, Adalyn, and Reagan Young, Abigail, Cora and Violet Singer, Nieum and Nadia Hultstrand.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Viola, his parents, brothers Clarence, Walter, Reuben, and Alvin Schlecht and sister Hilda Limbacher.
Funeral Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11, Faith Evangelical Church, Crystal Springs.
Prayer service 7:00 p.m. Faith Evangelical Church, Crystal Springs.
Burial: Medina Cemetery, Medina.
