Gilbert M. Andersen

Gilbert M. Andersen, 94, passed away peacefully at the North Dakota Veterans Home in Lisbon, ND on Friday, August 11, 2017. Gil was born December 11, 1922 in Jamestown at Trinity Hospital the son of Anton M. and Grete (Jensen) Andersen. He attended schools in Bloom and graduated from Jamestown High School, also taking classes at North Dakota State College, UND & University of Nebraska. In April of 1944, Gil entered the U.S. Marine Corp, having served in WWII and stationed in California and Hawaii. He served in Iwo Jima Volcano Islands in 1945, and received the Navy Unit Commendation for service in Iwo Jima. He was discharged on June 7, 1946. He met and married Ruth E. Disney on August 28, 1949 in Jamestown. She died in 2004. He lived in Jamestown where he worked for the North Dakota Soil Conservation District from 1949 until retirement in 1986.

Gil was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, life member of the VFW, American Legion, Elks, Eagles, life member of the Military Order of Cooties and NRA. Gilbert was a member of the VFW and the Color Guard for 71 years. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and spending time with family.

Gilbert is survived by sons, Rodney (Phyllis) of Grand Forks, ND, Randy Gainsville, FL, and Jeff (Shelly), Jamestown, daughter, Sue (Butch) Forester, Jamestown and daughter in-law Julie Andersen, Naples, FL., five grandsons, two granddaughters, and two great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and two sons, (Gary and Gregory).

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Jamestown with Pastor Kristi Weber officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service in the church. Burial with Military Honors will take place at Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown. Memorials preferred to the V.F.W. Military Order of the Cooties.
