Halsey Earl Sad

March 19, 1924 — March 22, 2017

Halsey E. Sad died March 22nd, 2017 under hospice care at the Clifford Chester Sims Veterans Home in Callaway, Florida after 93 years of loving his country.

Halsey was born March 19, 1924 in Dazey, North Dakota to Albert and Josephine (Stromme) Sad. Growing up during the Great Depression had a profound effect upon a young man who became an avid hunter, trapper, and fisherman, and never allowed any object to go to waste. He answered his country's call in 1943 when he was drafted into the U.S. Army reporting to Ft. Snelling. He served as a tank destroyer in the 86th Black Hawk Division. His unit went ashore at Le Harve France in 1944 and saw action in the Ruhr pocket. After recovering from shrapnel wounds to the face, he returned to the states and was discharged at Camp McCoy, WI. Forsaking the cold weather of war-time Europe, Halsey moved to Van Nuys California, enrolling in heavy duty mechanic school and entering the Civil Service workforce as a mechanic and machinist at North Island Naval Station in San Diego, California in 1949. In 1953 he was married to Mary Moore. They had one son Harold in 1954. Mary died in 1958. In 1961 Halsey met and married Pauline Morris of Jamestown, North Dakota. They lived in San Diego, CA having two more sons, Danny and Mark to join Harold. Upon his retirement from North Island in 1973, Halsey and Polly moved from San Diego to Jamestown where he opened Halsey and Sons shoe repair. Following Polly's death in 1994, Halsey moved to Jacksonville, FL in 1996 and later to Panama City, FL in 2003.

Halsey remained an avid outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman his entire life and could often be seen on long walks throughout Jamestown with his trusted canine companions or pitching horseshoes in the local parks. He proudly served as a Commander of both American Legion and VFW clubs in San Diego, CA and Jamestown. He always offered his Flag etiquette expertise and well-known singing voice to our National Anthem, How Great Thou Art, Danny Boy, and God Bless America. He was an original Jamestown VFW Hockey Booster, great fan of Legion/Eagles baseball, and long time Jamestown league bowler.

He is survived by one sister Joyce (Gardner) Fargo, his three sons: Harold (Susan) Jamestown; Dan (Amy) Charlestown, IN; and Mark (Sheryl) San Antonio, TX; Seven grandchildren: Rebecca, Laura (Adam Thoelke), James (Payton), Anthony, Isabella, Connor, and Sophia.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 4 brothers, 1 sister and 2 wives
