Hazel Arlene Eriksen, 91, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006, at the Central Dakota Village in Jamestown.
Hazel Nelson was born July 12, 1914 near Juanita, North Dakota, the daughter of Andrew and Clara (Rud) Nelson. She was educated at Rolling Prairie Township School, Carrington High School and Juanita High School, where she graduated in 1932. She taught at Eastman School, rural Foster County, one year and provided housekeeping services at homes in St. Paul, MN and Fargo. She returned to the Juanita area in 1940 to care for her nephews, Bryce and Royce Nelson.
Hazel married Bjerge Eriksen on June 9, 1944. They farmed north of Kensal on the Eriksen homestead. Bjerge passed away November 2, 1986. Hazel lived at the Rock of Ages in Jamestown from 2000 until 2003, when she moved to the Central Dakota Village.
She was famous for her large gardens, which provided produce for the family until the next gardening season. She raised chickens, made quilts and did embroidery. She loved to cook and bake and always had something fresh to serve guests who stopped in for coffee - bread, cake, pie, or cookies. She enjoyed playing cards and board games, especially whist and Scrabble.
She was a member of the Kozy K's Homemakers, Kensal Fifty-Plus Club, TOPS, Kensal United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women.
She is survived by her four children, Marsha (Dave) Parker, Williamston, MI, Dr. Bartlett (Helen) Eriksen, Fairmont, MN, Chris Eriksen, Jamestown and Robert (Sherry Herman) Eriksen, Bismarck, ND; a sister, Lyla Thompson, Spring Lake Park, MN; four sisters-in-law, Gwendolyn Nelson, Carrington, ND, Florence Nelson, Roseville, MN, Delores Nelson, Bremerton, WA, and Christine Stiles, Waukesha, WI; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
