Helen Hennings

May 24, 1933 — April 28, 2024

Jamestown, North Dakota

Helen Roesler was born on May 24th, 1933, to Samuel and Katie Roesler. She was born on the family farm near the town of Napoleon in Logan County, North Dakota. She attended country school through the 8th grade, then went on to attend Napoleon High School, which she graduated from in 1953. Helen attended Valley City State College for several summer school sessions to become qualified to teach elementary school. She taught at country schools in both Logan County and Kidder County for four years. She then moved to Jamestown, where she worked as a waitress at several different restaurants. During that time, she met Keith Hennings through his brother Larry, whose eventual wife was Helen’s roommate. Helen and Keith were married at St. John’s Lutheran church in Jamestown.

Their first residence was at the Hennings family farmstead just south of Jamestown. In 1969 they purchased the farm near Ypsilanti which would become their home for the rest of their lives. They began their farming years with cows, chickens, pigs, and geese. They were able to build their dairy operation to the point that they sold milk (and eggs) to distributors. To help make ends meet, they both became employed at the State Hospital in Jamestown. Keith passed away in 1995, after which Helen continued to work at the State Hospital for several years more, eventually retiring with 20+ years of service. Helen was a devout member of the Jamestown Seventh-day Adventist Church. She believed completely in salvation through Jesus Christ, and she never missed a Sabbath worship service. She also enjoyed her many pets and animal friends on her farm. She continued living on her farm until her final days.

Helen was preceded in death by her infant brother, Lorenze Roesler; her father, Samuel Roesler; her infant nephew, Corey Erickson; her husband, Keith Hennings; her niece, Mindie Erickson; her sister, Lila Gunsch; her mother, Katie Krein; her brother, Melvin Roesler; and her niece, June Gore. She is survived by her sister, Ruby (Arloe) Erickson; her niece, Pam (Trace) Hammargren; her niece, Brenda (Keith) Lauer; and her nephew, Troy (Leanne) Erickson.
