Henry ""Shorty"" Wallenvein, 89, Pettibone, ND died Tuesday, September 19, 2006 at Central Dakota Village in Jamestown.
Mr. Wallenvein was born June 22, 1917 to Daniel and Christina (Miller) Wallenvein, on a farm north of Lake Williams, ND. He attended country schools and did farm work until 1934. Due to the Great Depression and the drought in the 1930's there was not much work to be found so Shorty went out west and found seasonal work. He rode the freight train from job to job and in the late fall of 1934 he got into the CCC. On May 19, 1941 he was inducted into the US Army and served his country in the Asiatic Pacific Theater until his discharge on November 9, 1945. Shorty returned to the Lake Williams/Pettibone area and stayed with his younger brother on the farm for 18 months and helped him. He then bought a small farm where he made his living until his retirement in 1977. Shorty moved to Jamestown in October 2003.
He was a member of the VFW Post #6833 in Tuttle. Shorty enjoyed hunting, fishing and the great outdoors.
Shorty is survived by two nieces, Sandy (Raliegh) Swensrud, Montana and Delilah (Don) Guthmiller, Jamestown; two nephews, Ronnie Wallenvein, Bismarck, ND and Warren Wallenvein, Tuttle, ND and one sister-in-law, Lydia Wallenvein, Tuttle, ND.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Albert & Arthur.
