Ilean Backer

Sarah "Ilean" Backer, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015 surrounded by her family at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford, ND. Ilean was born to Daniel and Sarah (Hoggarth) Clancy on December 22, 1916, at Kensal. She graduated from Kensal School. Ilean married Lester J. Backer on November 23, 1938, at St. John's Catholic Church, Kensal. Ilean and Lester farmed on the family farm north of Courtenay until they moved into Courtenay and owned and operated Backer's Oil Company until Lester's death in 1981. She continued to operate the business with her son, Keith until retiring. Ilean resided in Courtenay until she moved to James House in Jamestown and later residing at the Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd, New Rockford. Ilean enjoyed spending time with family and friends playing cards. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She is survived by her children, Janice (Norris) Thompson, Audubon, MN, Leslie (Cathy) Backer, Lake Park, MN, Mary (Elliot) Paczkowski, Kensal, Kent (Jane) Backer, Oakes, ND, Claudia (Darold) Soupir, Courtenay, Keith (Terri) Backer, New Rockford; 14 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester, daughter, Corean, parents, 6 brothers and 5 sisters.

Funeral Mass: 10:30 AM, Friday, April 24, 2015 at St. John's Catholic Church, Kensal, ND with Fr. Bernard Pfau, officiating.
No Visitation scheduled.
Vigil Service: 7:30 PM, Thursday, April 23 at St. John's Catholic Church, Kensal.
Burial: St. Boniface Catholic Cemetery, Wimbledon, ND.
