Irene (Rath) Finck was born on May 17, 1926 on a little farm 4 miles West of Heil, ND to Christ and Lydia (Lippert) Rath. Irene went to school in Heil for 8 years and then their family moved to Grandpa Rath’s farm 7 miles East of Elgin, ND. Irene attended high school in Elgin for 4 years, graduating on May 12, 1944.

Irene was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart; Edgar H. Finck, on June 4th, 1944. On August 4th, 1944 their first son; Gary Lee was born. In October of that same year, Edgar entered the military and Irene and the baby lived with her parents in Elgin. After 4 months, Edgar came home on leave and in November of 1945, they were blessed with their second son, Harold James. Edgar returned to his service duty while Irene continued to live with her parents while raising her sons. Edgar was discharged in the fall of 1946. The couple continued to live with Irene’s parents for about a year.

In October of 1947, Edgar, Irene, and their two sons moved to Fargo, ND, where Edgar could attend Fargo Barber College. Upon his graduation, they moved to Glen Ullin, ND where they lived for 2 years and then to Flasher, ND where they made their home for almost 10 years. Edgar owned a barber shop and Irene worked at the local drug store. In 1953, they were blessed with a third son; Rodney Wayne. In 1956, Edgar, Irene, and the boys welcomed a little girl; Sylvia Jane, into their lives. In 1957 their 4th son; Perry Dean, was born. The family continued to live in Flasher owning the barber shop, recreation hall, and a restaurant. In 1959, their family moved to Jamestown, ND.

Upon moving to Jamestown, Irene worked at the Parkway Cafe for 3 months, Jamestown Hospital for 4 months and then the State Hospital. Irene continued working at the State Hospital until 1965 when she went on maternity leave for her 5th son, Todd Allen. Irene then continued her career at the State Hospital until May of 1991, when she retired after 32 years of service.

Edgar and Irene were always very proud of their children and loved to celebrate their successes. They loved to go camping and fishing and created many wonderful memories at their cabin on Lake Ashtabula, North of Valley City, ND.

Irene continued to stay busy volunteering with the American Legion Auxiliary (44 years), serving in a variety of positions. She served as President, Vice President, Chaplin, Sergeant at Arms, Poppy Co-Chairman, Membership, and Girls State Co-Chairman. She has been a PUFL (Paid Up For Life) member for the past 14 years. Irene was always ready to step in and volunteer whenever a job needed to be done. Irene also volunteered to work with Veterans at the State Hospital for 20 years and at High Acres and Central Dakota Nursing Homes. She loved to bring joy to those who needed it. Irene attended Immanuel Lutheran Church where she grew her faith and served in various positions.

Irene will be deeply missed by those who have been touched by her kindness. Irene passed away Sunday, December 16, 2018, but she now lives eternally in the presence of Jesus.
