Irene Stoddart

April 16, 1919 — August 31, 2008

Irene Stoddart, 89, of Bismarck, ND, formerly of Jamestown, ND, died peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, August 31, 2008 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck, ND.

Irene Sophie Harr was born April 16, 1919, near Cleveland, ND, the daughter of Carl and Johanna (Bitz) Harr. Carl died five months before her birth of the Spanish flu in November 1918. She received her education in rural schools and grew up on the family farm. She dreamed of going to beauty school to be a hair stylist, but a hail storm came through and destroyed the family's crops and livestock in the early 1930's taking her dream with it. The family later moved to Medina, ND.

Irene married Lloyd Landscoot in September 1936. They first made their home in Eldridge, ND, and later moved to Jamestown. Four children resulted from this marriage, two of whom died as infants, Marlyn and Calvin. They later divorced, and Lloyed died in 1943 during WWII. Irene supported herself and her two daughters, Gayle and Janice, by taking in laundry and doing housekeeping for others.

Irene married Earl Stoddart on February 21, 1958 in Wimbledon, ND. They made their home in Jamestown where she was a housewife and mother to their only daughter, Laurie. They briefly lived in Lovell, WY and Billings, MT, in the early 1960's. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Jamestown. Earl died on January 13, 1987. In her later years, she worked parttime at the Jamestown Civic Center, a job she thoroughly enjoyed. She became a resident of Missouri Slope LCC in December of 2001 due to Alzheimer's.

Irene was a wonderful cook and seamstress and enjoyed gardening, canning, reading, crocheting, crossword puzzles, and spending time with family and friends. Her greatest love was being a grandmother, lovingly known as Nana by several of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Irene is survived by one daughter, Laurie Stroh, Bismarck, ND; 11 grandchildren, Cynthia (Marvin) Hanson of Cedar Rapids, IA, Robert Skaar of Dallas, TX, Wally (Lori) Skaar of Flower Mound, TX, Karl Skaar of Krum, TX (currently in Fort Riley, KS, waiting for deployment to Afghanistan), David (Tove) Hicks-Klund of Appleton, WI, Timothy (Lisa) Klundt of Rio Rancho, NM, Vicki (Brent) Gellner of Fountain Hills, AZ, Pamela (Mike) Ward of Dallas, TX, Scott Klundt of Denver, CO, Christopher Stroh and Matthew Stroh, both of Richfield, MN; 9 great grandchildren, Alexandria and Jessica Skaar, Davis and Darbi Hicks-Klund, Cassidy, Dylan and Trey Klundt, Casey Knodel and Carly Gellner; one sister, Orva Rickard, Butte, MT; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Vincent and Mary Stoddart, Jamestown, ND; one son-in-law, Richard Klundt of Payson, AZ; several nieces and nephews, and her very special friends, Joseph and Elizabeth Stroh of Jamestown, whom she enjoyed spending time and playing cards with, and Sandy Harring of Jamestown.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Walter, Benjamin, and Robert Harr; one sister, Viola Boehm; her husband, Earl; her daughters, Gayle Skaar and Janice Thompson; two infant children, Marlyn and Calvin Landscoot; and one grandchild, William Skaar.

It was Irene's wish that there be no funeral or viewing. There will be a graveside service at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Jamestown, on Monday, September 8, 2008 at 10:00 AM.

There will be a private family prayer service at 7:30 PM, Sunday, September 7, 2008 at the Eddy Funeral Home in Jamestown, ND.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Alzheimer's Research Fund.
