Dr. James E. Frey, Professor Emeritus at California State University, died Thursday, May 23, 2013 in Oakland, CA.
He was born November 2, 1925, at Jamestown, ND, the son of Edwin and Clara (Koehn) Frey. During World War II he was in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. A graduate of Jamestown High School and Jamestown College, he received his M.A. degree at Columbia University, New York, before working for the U.S. government in Europe for four years. Later he taught in a California high school for several years before enrolling at the University of California, Berkeley, where he received his Ph.D. degree in English literature. He was then on the faculty of CSU Fresno for thirty-one years until his retirement in 1994. Since then he has made his home in Oakland, CA.
During his academic career he published two textbooks and numerous scholarly articles. Keenly interested in international affairs and foreign travel, he was active in the International Programs of California State University, and on two occasions he served as director of the foreign study office in Florence, Italy.
Those honoring his exceptional life, which has positively touched many, include his nieces and nephews, Judi Celashi, Robert Frey, Douglas Radtke, Marvin Frey, Ellen Pedersen, Mona Williams, and Jamie Frey and a multitude of friends and family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Ruby Berge and Doris Radtke; brothers, Ervin Frey and Carl Frey; and two nephews, Dr. Jeremy Berge and Gary Frey.
Memorial Service: 4:00 p.m. Friday, July 26, 2013 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Jamestown.
Interment - Highland Home Cemetery, Jamestown.
